BANCAT organized workshop in March 2004 and documented four Technologies and Approaches from Matiranga Upazila of Khagrachari Hill District.

The Technologies are:

1. Hill agro forestry   2. Modified Traditional Jhum Cultivation   3. Multipurpose farm pond   4. Foothill terrace for Rice Cultivation
             
     

The Approaches are:

1. Livelihood Approach for adoption of Agroforestry Farming.
2. Traditional Approach to Jhum Cultivation.
3. Indigenous Approach to rain water harvesting
4. Traditional Approach to Foothill Terraced Rice Cultivation.

The First national workshop also highlighted a number of Technologies and Approaches for future documentation. Among them:

  1. Terrace cultivation under rainfed condition.
  2. Irrigated foot hill terrace/valley. (Already documented)
  3. Godha/earthen dam for water harvesting and irrigated crop cultivation.
  4. Mulching of tuber crops.
  5. Godha or dam of permanent structure.
  6. Homestead gardening/Home gardens.
  7. Jhum or slash and burn cultivation system.
  8. Watershed management with community forest reserve/village common forest

In March 2005 BANCAT again organized another workshop at Bandarban and documented five Technologies and three Approaches in Sharonpara, Faruque para, Laimi para of Badarban Sadar Upazila of Bandarban Hill District.

   

The Technologies are:

1. Teak-Banana and Mixed fruit Farming.   2. Community Based Seepage Water harvesting.   3. Terraced Rice Cultivation Irrigated with Diverted Creek Water.   4. Community Forest .
             
     

The Approaches are:

1. Innovative Approach to Mixed Timber and Fruit Tree Farming.
2. Seepage Water harvesting for Easy livelihood
3. Rational Utilization of Creek Water

Afterward BANCAT group worked for more documentation from different parts of CHT. On the basis of those documented Technologies and Approaches a BANCAT Overview book titled “ Selected Natural Resource Conservation Approaches and Technologies in The Chittagong Hill Tracts, Bangladesh was published in 2006. A brochure was published to popularize BANCAT to SWC community and the work coordinated by Mr. Khisa, SK and Shoaib JU with the contribution of the participants of first national workshop of WOCAT at Khagrachari-Rangamati .

Funding Source:

Initial financial assistance for BANCAT operation was provided by CHTDB. Mr.S.K.Khisa, BANCAT Coordinator will arrange fund from prospective donors. Other funding source will be looked into as and when necessary. For documentation and publication of BANCAT Factsheets in 2009, funding was made available by Dr. Isabelle Providoli from ICIMOD, Kathmandu, Nepal.
